Amador studied in Cartagena, Colombia and the United States, receiving his degree in accounting, before taking a position in the Treasury Department. Following independence of the Republic in 1903, he was appointed Minister of Finance. From 1904 until 1908, he served as Consul General in Hamburg, Germany. He was then dispatched in the same capacity to New York City in the United States, where he attended the Robert Henri School of Painting. During his time in New York City, he refined his painting skills and also became interested in linguistics. He learned the artificial international language of Esperanto and further developed his own, which he called Panamanes. He returned to Panama in 1926, where he worked as a clerk in the Department of Revenue. He continued to paint and ultimately donated the majority of his work to the University of Panama.
