Joseph was christened March 27, 1787, Wittelsheim, Haut Rhin, Alsace, France, the son of Jean Burger and Maria Anna Kuntz.
Sometime before 1813 in Alsace, he married Magdalene Schott from his home town; she was the daughter of Phillippo Schott and Maria Anna Erner, born 3 Apr 1785.
Joseph departed Havre in 1851 on the "Zanon", ariving December 12, 1851 in New Orleans with his wife, and eight of their fourteen known children: Marie Anne 1815, Therese 1817, Brigette (abt 1820), Catherine 1821, Joseph 1826-1866 who married Briggita Shreyer, Christine 1828, Josephine 1835, and Emmalie (abt 1837).
Other children were Magdalena 1857, Joseph, Jr. 1813-1872 who married Cathrine Heibler, Catherine 1823, Antoine 1830, Francoise 1832, and Dominique 1834.
Joseph Senior died May 4, 1860 in Medina County, and was buried in St. Louis cemetery May 5th.
