"The Settling of a Frontier-a History of Rural Taylor County" [TX] by Daniel Zachry, pub. 1980
WILHELM FREDECK pg.165-166 (The following is condensed from original text)
........"On Dec. 3, 1890, the Fredecks acquired 2 acres of land adjoining their acerage to the south. The land was deeded to Rosalie by M. Manniwitz and his wife, Bertha, out of gratitude for Rosalie nursing Bertha Manniwitz through a long illness. The Manniwitz lived a great distance to the NE and Rosalie walked across the pastures to help her."..... (following is a lot of information on their house etc)
... She was a thrifty woman and saved much of the food the truck patch produced. She raised geese, which she plucked for soft featherbeds and pillows. Some of these are still in the family...... A spinning wheel was brought from the old country, and here Rosalie spun and made clothing for her family.
... Rosalie Fredeck drove herself about the country in her own buggy.
... On Nov 11, 1891, a disastrous fire broke out in a haystack near the site of the first Fredeck home. Joseph (called Little Joe), was fatally burned. Rosalie faught valiantly to save her son. Her hands were severly burned and Dr. Jim Alexander feared that amputation was the only answer. This stout hearted pioneer woman said an emphatic No. She would not permit it. Her hands healed and she used them the remainder of her life.
Rosalie Fredeck lived to be 84 years of age. She was born in Berlin, Germany, Feb. 18, 1850 and died in Abilene, March 3, 1932.
Wilhelm Fredeck too was born in Berlin, Jan. 6, 1852. He died in Abilene June 23, 1940 at the age of 88. Both are buried in Abilene.
NOTE: Rosalie and her brother, Albert Dams (buried Condon, OR) are cousins to Bernard Giede (also buried at Abilene) and his sister, Augusta Mary (Giede) Shaffer (buried at Condon, OR). They all came from the Berlin, Germany area.
