Also served as a Member of the Louisiana State House of Representatives, United States Senator from Louisiana from 1842 to 1843, United States Secretary of War from 1850 to 1853, Delegate from Louisiana to the Confederate Provisional Congress from 1861 to 1862, and Representative from Louisiana in the Confederate Congress from 1862 to 1865.
