Basketball Player. Lorenzo Charles scored the game-winning basket in the championship game of the 1983 NCAA Basketball Tournament. Charles' buzzer-beating dunk after catching a short 30-foot shot from Dereck Whittenburg gave the North Carolina State University Wolfpack the 54-52 victory over the heavily-favored Houston Cougars led by Akeem Olajuwon, Clyde "The Glide" Drexler, and the rest of Phi Slama Jama. Video replays of coach Jim Valvano running onto the court after that shot are shown on TV almost every year during the tournament. Charles was selected 41st overall in the 1985 NBA draft. He played briefly with the Atlanta Hawks of the NBA, and then spent time in the European professional leagues. Charles died Monday, June 27, 2011, in a tour bus accident in Raleigh, N.C. He was driving an Elite Coach company bus on Interstate 40 with no passengers in it when the accident occurred. He was 47.

You were a good kid, Lorenzo. My school recruited you and I had a great time with you during your campus visit. Was sad you chose NC State but happy with your championship. This was one time nice guys didn't finish last.
