Panamanian President. Amador received his medical degree from the University of Cartagena, but moved to the Isthmus of Panama in 1855. He initially worked as chief medical officer of the Panama Railroad in Colon before moving to Panama City, where he worked at Saint Thomas Hospital. He became active in the Conservative party and represented Veraguas in the Congress of New Granada. In 1869, he was elected to the Colombian presidency but was unable to take office due to a coup. Following the failure of the French canal effort and the Colombian rejection of the Hay-Herran Treaty, Amador, along with Jose Arango and others, organized and arranged for Panamanian independence in collusion with the United States. Independence was declared on November 3, 1903, after which he served on the provisional governing committee until his election the following year. Dr. Amador served as Panama's first president from 1904 until 1908. During his tenure, he defended the Hay-Bunau-Varilla Treaty and instituted radical reforms, promoting Panama's role in international commerce. He retired to private life until his death. The Order of Manuel Amador Guerrero was established in 1953 as Panama's highest honor. (bio by: BluGraver)
