Civil War Congressional Medal of Honor Recipient, US Congressman. Served in the Civil War as a Sergeant, in Company H, 124th New York Volunteer Infantry. He was awarded the CMOH for his bravery at the Battle of Chancellorsville, Virginia on May 3, 1863. Hic citation reads "Volunteered in response to a call and alone, in the face of a heavy fire of musketry and canister, went and procured ammunition for the use of his comrades". He recieved an officer's commission soon afterwards, and rose to Major of the regiment. His Medal was awarded to him on June 10, 1896. After the conclusion of the conflict he entered the political ring, and elected to represent New York's 20th District in the United States House of Representatives, serving from 1903 to 1913. He was one of five 124th New York soldiers to be awarded the Medal of Honor for their bravery during the Civil War (the others being Sergeant Private Archibald Freeman, Private Nathan M. Hallock, Corporal George W. Thompkins, and 1st Lieutenant Lewis S. Wisner). (bio by: Russ Dodge)
