Roberta June Golay Backus

Roberta June "Bertie" Golay Backus, lifelong resident of Ponca City, died Sunday, Dec. 21, 2003, at her home. She was 61.

A memorial service will be held Friday, Dec. 26, 2003, at 3:30 p.m. at Glad Tidings Assembly of God with the Rev. Rodney Hutcheson, pastor, officiating. Viewing for friends and family will be at Grace Memorial Chapel from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 26, 2003.

Bertie was born Oct. 13, 1942, in Ponca City, the daughter of Charles Barton Golay Sr. and Minnie Brown Golay. After the death of her mother when she was six years old, she was reared by her sister-in-law, Dorothy Golay. She grew up in Ponca City and attended Ponca City schools. On March 31, 1963, she married James H. "Jim" Backus in Ponca City. She served her family as a homemaker. She was a loving and giving wife, mother, grandmother and friend.

Bertie was an active member of Glad Tidings Assembly of God Church where she helped in children's church. Her love of God and intercessory prayer were the most important aspects of her life. Bertie was very family oriented and loved spending time with her children and grandchildren. She was also an avid Elvis fan.

She is survived by five daughters, Michelle Fahs and her husband, Jay Goodman; Chauntina Medina and her husband, Carlos, Dondi Anderson, and her husband, David; and Merry Hays and her husband, Robert, all of Ponca City, and Susie Fishburn and her husband, Rick Murr, of Sedan, Kan.; and one son, Tony Backus and his wife, April, of Ponca City. Bertie also played a significant role in rearing Crystal Converse, Bobby Backus, John Backus, Kathlyn Backus, and Ruby Backus.

Additional survivors include one sister, Mary Sue Roberts and her husband, Clyde, of Orlando, Okla.; three brothers, Charles Barton Golay Jr., of Deer Creek, Buster Golay and his wife, Bonnie, of Ponca City, and John Irvin Golay and his wife, Mildred, of Newkirk; 19 grandchildren, Christal and her husband, Wayne, Valorie and her husband, Jack, James, Joseph, Josh, Jacqy, Garry, Damien, Lucas, Jared, Jay, Tyler, Sheyenne, Clayton, Carsha, Katie, Charles Jr., Christian, and Casey; and six great-grandchildren, Tristian, Dylon, Trenton, Oceyonna, Dezmirae and Amy.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Jim on March 21, 2003, three brothers, Bob, Joe and Jimmy Golay, and an infant sister, Sally Golay.
