Mitchell was the son of Ray and Marie Lynn Kilpatrick, and the brother of Edith Faye Kilpatrick. He grew up in Morrow, Ga. but moved to his father's hometown of Murphy, NC in 1978 and attended Murphy High School. Mitchell spent a great deal of time with his grandmother Rilla Belle Palmer Kilpatrick learning how to cook.
After graduating from Murphy High School in 1982 Mitchell returned to Morrow, Ga. to live with his sister Edie. He worked at the Atlanta Hilton and Towers and completed an apprentice chef program. He worked at the Hilton for over ten years.
Mitchell was roommates with his friend Charles Thomas for 14 years at four different residences around metro Atlanta (Forest Park, Northeast Atlanta, Grant Park, & Morrow). He had met Charles while attending Morrow Junior High School.
While living in Grant Park, Mitchell was confirmed at All Saints Episcopal Church in Atlanta.
Mitchell moved to Miami Beach, Florida in the late 1990's to accept a position of beverage manager and help open the new Loews Miami Beach Hotel. The first year he roomed with his friend Jason Sliman at The Georgian Condo, then later Mitchell rented a condo by himself in The Decoupage, a highrise one block away from the hotel.
After three years in Miami Beach, in 2002 Mitchell died at home unexpectedly because of a blood clot. There was an Episcopalian funeral service held for Mitchell at the Townson-Rose Funeral Home in Murphy, NC and also a memorial service held at the Loews Miami Beach Hotel.
