Governor of Minnesota (1954-1960) and U.S. Secretary of Agriculture (1961-1969) under Presidents Kennedy and Johnson. Graduate of the University of Minnesota in 1940 where he quarterbacked Minnesota's national champion football teams. Only person to be nominated for governor of Minnesota 5 times (lost in 1952, elected in 1954, re-elected in 1956 and 1958, defeated in 1960). Started Walter Mondale's political career by appointing him Minnesota attorney general in 1959 when the incumbent, Miles Lord, resigned. (bio by: Bill Sonsin)
