First daughter of Gov. David Christy & Lydia (Story) Butler. The town of Violet, Nebraska was named after her by her father.

She went to Chicago in 1882 where she studied music.

Married Feb. 13, 1887 to Joseph Wilson McCoy, her first husband, who was born April 8, 1854 in Wooster, Wayne, Ohio and died July 24, 1917 in Cedar Vale, Chautauqua, Kansas. They later separated.

She again turned to her music, studied in New York, training her operatic soprano voice, and toured the country with stage and concert companies. Later she came back and taught school in both Kansas and Nebraska.
