Bess Irene Bohrer was the daughter of George Washington Bohrer and Clara Henkel. In early life, she grew up on a farm near Blair Mountain(?), PA until the death of her mother. Her father remarried and moved to a farm near Hagerstown, Md where he died. Bess and her siblings were then sent to live with her father's sister and husband Lydia and John Zuck. John farmed and also was a minister in the Church of the Brethren.
When she was old enough, Bess worked as a hired girl until she was able to attend a school run by the Church of the Brethren in Mt. Morris, IL. After earning her teaching certificate she taught near Clarence IA. She met George at the Church of the Brethren near Clarence.
George and Bess farmed near Cedar Rapids, IA until George died . After his death she moved briefly to California and lived with her sister, but then moved back to Tipton, IA and lived in the home of a cousin until her death.
