In the spring of 1911, May was visiting relatives in Beresford, South Dakota when she met John Wass. On November 22, 1911, she and John Wass were married. The couple had no children.
May spent her last five years in failing health. An operation was said to have provided her with four years of relief. A second operation was performed on May about a year before her death. However, her health deteriorated rapidly after her second husband's death; and, she spent her last three months bedridden.
