Nelson Payton Dies
Following Long Illness
Nelson Payton, 71 years old and a resident of Montezuma for more than 35 years, died at his home here on Saturday, May 18th after a lingering illness of about two years. Death was attributed to complications.
Mr. Payton was born near Wave-
land, Indiana on April 18, 1869, a
son of Charles S. and Catherine Whitaker Payton. He was united in marriage to Deliah Whitaker, August 12, 1890
and to this union, nine children were born. Three children died in infancy.
For 18 years, Mr. Payton was mine foreman at Burns and Hancock Fire Brick and Clay company, which posi-
tion he held until about two years ago when he was forced to retire due to ill health. A few months ago he
entered the Robert Long Hospital Indianapolis for observation and it was found that physicians could do
nothing, and he returned home.
Besides the widow he is survived
by four sons and two daughters, Paul
of Muncie, Indiana; Jay, Byron and
Thurman of this place; Mrs. Clarence
Machin of Houston, Texas; and Mrs.
Dorothy Jones of Hillsdale. Seven
grandchildren also survive, Earnest
and DeElda Payton, Betty, Frances,
Jay and Ray Payton and Mervin Jones
besides one brother, Lon Payton of
this place .
Funeral services were conducted at
2 P.M. Monday from the home with
Rev. Frank Peterson officiating.
Interment was made in Oakland cemetery.
