Born the elder of two to Henry W. & Alice Vercler Koerner, Merle married Louise Bressner on Oct. 5, 1939 in Pontiac. His parents died before him. Surviving are his wife, his daughter, three grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and his sister.

He graduated from Illinois State Normal U. and taught for several years at the elementary level. He farmed his family farm west of Pontiac until retirement.

He was a member of First United Methodist church of Pontiac, active in the choir and men's quartet. He was a 60 year member of the Pontiac City Band and belonged to Livingston Co. Farm Bureau.
