LEO S. MURRAY, LORAIN STORE MANAGER, DIES
Lorain- Leo S. Murray, 58, of 40011 Detroit Rd., Avon, manager of the J.C. Penney Co. store here for the past 14 years, died at 5:20 a.m. today in St. Joseph Hospital.
Mr. Murray, who was on vacation at the time, became ill Sept. 3 and was taken to the hospital and the same day underwent an appendectomy. It was pointed out, however, that the operation was not a contributing factor in his death.
Mr. Murray, who was due to retire from the Penney organization next July, was active in Lorain community affairs for many years. He was a member of the Lorain Chamber of Commerce of which he was a past director, a past president of the Lorain Merchants Association, a member of the Kiwanis Club, Moose, Knights of Columbus, Council 637: American Legion Post 30, Elyria Country Club and Lorain County Saddle Club. He was know for his ability as a horseman.
Past Commander
He also was a former past commander of the RObert KEnnington Post, American Legion, Indianapolis.
Mr. Murray was a member of St. Mary's Church, Avon, and of the HOly Name Society of the church. He participated actively in this year's successfull $1,600,000 drive for funds to build an addition to St. Joseph Hospital
He had been in the employ of the J.C. Penney Co. since 1929, starting at the St. Cloud, Minn., store. After a year there he was transferred to Indianapolis, where he was a floor manager for 12 years. He came to Lorain as store manager in 1943.
Mr. Murray was born in Nora, ILl. Oct. 21, 1898 and later lived in Rockford, Ill. He was a graduate of St. Thomas College, St. Paul, Minn., and was a veteran of World War I
serving two years with the U.S. Infantry in France.
Wife Called Home
When Mr. Murray became ill, his wife, Margaret, was in Sacramento, Calif., visiting their son, Robert Leo, and family. A grandson, Jeffrey Lee Murray, was born to the younger Mrs. Murray in the California city Sept. 7. Upon hearin gof her husband's illness, Mrs. Murray returned to Lorain immediately by plane.
Besides his wife, son and grandson, Mr. Murray is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Paul Schwindler, Indianapolis; three other grandchildren, Damon Robert and Gerald Schwindler; two brothers, Frank, Rockford, Ill., and Willialm, Dallas, Tex; two sisters, Mrs. Frank Uhlenhake, Rockford Ill., and Mrs. Andrew Kelly, Wallace S.D..
The body is at the Reidy-Scanlan Funeral Home and will be removed to the Murray Home tomorrow where friends may call until time of funeral services. Services will be in the residence at 8:30 a.m. MOnday to be followed by a solemn high mass in St. Mary's Church, Avon, at 9. The Rev. Paul H. Seikel will officiate and burial will be in Calvary Cemetery.
Rosary services, by the St Mary's Holy Name Society and Knights of Columbus, will be in the residence at 8 p.m. Sunday.
