Bernard "Ben" was born on a farm northwest of Carlyle, Illinois, attended St. Mary's School and grew to young manhood in Carlyle and vicinity. He was united in marriage to Mary Peppenhorst, April 16, 1902 at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Carlyle. They are the parents of seven children, four daughters and three sons.

Ben and family first lived on a farm southwest of Carlyle, then later bought a farm on Route 127 north of Carlyle where they lived about 30 years. Ben was a farmer from childhood until 1945, when he retired and bought a home in northwest Carlyle. He was a member of Carlyle Brass Band for a number of years.

At age 74, Ben passed away in his home. He had been in failing health for nine months.

His WW I Draft Registration of Sept 12, 1918 describes him as age 45, a self employed farmer, of medium height and slender build, he has brown eyes and black hair.
