Sportscaster. He will be best remembered for his work on CNN and his announcing of boxing contests with Showtime. Born Nicholas Charles Nickeas, the son of a taxi driver-absentee father, he grew up under impoverished circumstances and had difficulties learning in high school. He would take on several odd jobs in order to fund his studies at Columbia College in Chicago, where he was educated in Communications and Journalism. He landed his first job in 1970 with WICS in Springfield, Illinois, where he covered a wide range of stories. This led to positions with stations in Baltimore and Washington DC, finally with CNN, where he helped launch the network in June 1980. Later in the decade, he was partnered with Fred Hickman as co-host of "CNN Sports Tonight" and earned multiple Cable Ace Awards during the show's more-than twenty-year run. After the program ended in 2001, he joined Showtime as a broadcaster for "ShoBox: The Next Generation" and remained there until his illness forced him to stop. He died following a two-year battle with bladder cancer. (bio by: C.S.)
