Mary's first husband is believed to have died shortly before she married widower John Darnell on 2 October 1847 in Jefferson County, Illinois. While they are not known to have had surviving children together, John also had several children from previous marriages. Although all eight members of their Jefferson County, Illinois household in 1850 were enumerated with the surname "Darnell": John (48-NC), Mary A. (40-KY), John F (19-IL), James M. (15-IL), William (19-IL), Matthew (14-IL), Henry (14-IL), Angeline (6-IL), the last four were actually children of James Maneese.
By 1860, only John's youngest son, James (25-IL), was still living with John (58-NC) & Mary A. (55-KY). Mary's youngest daughter, Mary Angeline (15-IL), had married Andrew Payne Lynch (23-TN) the previous December and was enumerated right next door. Mary's son, James William, had married Amanda Jane Lynch in 1853 before his early death in 1856. With the outbreak of the Civil War, tragedy was about to strike Mary's family again: her son, George, who married Elizabeth Siambra Keller in 1851, died serving in Tennessee in April 1865.
George's youngest daughter, Salena Caroline (13-IL), was enumerated with John (68-NC) and Mary (64-KY) in the 1870 census. Mary's son, Matthew (33-IL) was also living with them, along with his wife, Mary Virginia Haynie (18-TN), whom he married in 1867, and their son, Thomas (1-IL). John Darnell died in July 1875, leaving Mary a widow once more.
Mary's son, Matthew, and his wife, Mary Haynie, divorced in February 1876. Matthew (40-IL) and his son, Thomas (10-IL), were living with his mother, Mary (75-KY), in 1880. Mary did not appear in the 1900 census so she was likely deceased by that time, though her exact date of death and place of burial are unknown. Several Manees children are buried in South Hickory Hill Cemetery and we have placed her here although no stone is found. Corrections and clarification are welcome.
