Composer, Conductor. He will be best remember for "Park Avenue Beat", which was the "Perry Mason" TV series theme music. The son of composer George Steiner, he received his degree in music composition from the Oberlin Conservatory at Oberlin College (Ohio) and began his career in entertainment on the radio penning scores for the programs "Suspense", "CBS Radio Workshop" and "This is Your FBI". He would go on to make his mark in Hollywood with a string of uncredited films followed with him serving as conductor for the picture "Run for the Sun" (1955). His notable work was predominantly on television which included the programs "Boots and Saddles", "The Twilight Zone", "Star Trek" and "The Guns of Will Sonnett". He would achieve recognition for his contributions to the films "The Color Purple" (1985, for which he shared an Academy Award nomination) and "Mrs. Doubtfire". He was the father of singer Wendy Waldman. (bio by: C.S.)
