Dorline was born April 23, 1920 in Glenwood to Theodore and Minnie (Prottengeier) Neumann. Dorline graduated from Villard High School in 1938. She worked in Minneapolis for a time and then married Boyd Backlund on June 18, 1944. Some of the things Dorline enjoyed were her family, sewing, canning, gardening, crafts and woodworking, as well as fishing and boating at the family's lake cottage on Lake Ida. She also loved music and was a long-standing member of the First Lutheran Church choir.
