US Congressman. Elected to represent Indiana's 1st District in the United States House of Representatives, serving from 1857 to 1861, and 1865 to 1875. Also served as a Member of the Indiana State House of Representatives from 1849 to 1850, and 1863, Member of Indiana State Senate from 1850 to 1852, Circuit Judge from 1854 to 1857, Delegate to the Democratic National Convention from Indiana in 1864, and 1868, Member of the Democratic National Committee from Indiana from 1864 to 1872, and Justice of the Indiana Supreme Court from 1877 to 1889.
