Governor of Arizona. A member of the Republican Party, he served as Arizona's 9th governor from 1951 until 1955 and the first to be born in the 20th century. In 1925 he moved with his family to Tempe, Arizona. After graduating in 1930 from Arizona State University in Tempe, Arizona he became the Program Director of KFAD (now KTAR) Radio in Phoenix, Arizona from 1930 until 1951. During World War II he served as a war correspondent and covered the Japanese surrender ceremony on the battleship USS Missouri on September 2, 1945. In 1950 he defeated pioneering female Democratic politician Ana Frohmiller for the Arizona governorship. In 1954 he lost his re-election bid for governor to former Democratic Senator Ernest W. McFarland. Afterwards, he became a political aide to President Dwight D. Eisenhower. He earned honorary LL.D. degrees from University of Redlands in Redlands, California, Chapman University in Orange, California, Arizona State University, Lebanon College in Lebanon, New Hampshire, and Bradley University in Peoria, Illinois.
