U.S. Congressman. Born in Vermontville, Michigan, he graduated from Carleton College, in 1881, taught Latin at Carleton College, (1881-82) and was superintendent of the public schools at Fergus Falls, Minnesota, (1882-85). He studied law, was admitted to the bar, practiced law in Beloit, Kansas, in 1885, moved to Kansas City, Missouri, in 1888 and continued the practice of law. In 1905, he was elected as a Republican to the Fifty-ninth and Sixtieth Congresses, serving until 1909. After his term, he was appointed a member of the Missouri Waterway Commission, serving (1911-12). In 1921, he was elected to the Sixty-seventh Congress, serving until 1923 and elected to the Seventy-first Congress, serving (1929-31). An unsuccessful candidate for reelection, he lived in retirement until his death at age 92 in St. Petersburg, Florida.
