US Congressman. At the outbreak of the Civil War he enlisted in the Union Army, and was mustered in as a 1st Sergeant in Company C, 11th Pennsylvania Reserves on June 10, 1861. Promoted to 1st Lieutenant on April 11, 1863, he was captured by the Confederates at the May 1864 Battle of the Wilderness. He was honorably mustered out on March 12, 1865, and was brevetted Captain, US Volunteers for his services. After the war he was admitted to the Pennsylvania Bar in 1866. and later was elected as a Republican to represent Pennsylvania's 26th Congressional District in the United States House of Representatives, serving from 1885 to 1887.
