Literary Figure. A steamboat pilot, he taught Samuel Clemens, aka Mark Twain, riverboat piloting on the Mississippi River between St. Louis and New Orleans for a fee of $500. Their relationship comes to life in Twain's classic tale, "Life On the Mississippi". (bio by: Connie Nisinger)
