Death: Dec. 7, 1910

Civil War Congressional Medal of Honor Recipient. He served in the Union Navy. His citation reads "Served as a seaman on board the USS Kearsarge when she destroyed the CSS Alabama off Cherbourg, France, 19 June 1864. Acting as a first loader of the No. 2 gun during this bitter engagement, Read exhibited marked coolness and good conduct and was highly recommended for his gallantry under fire by his divisional officer." (bio by: Don Morfe)
