From the Pinckneyville newspaper, "Mrs. Sarah Smith Horner was born February 14, 1830 at Fredericksburg, Indiana. She was the daughter of John and Martha (Thomas) Smith of Pennsylvania and was one of the seven children who grew up to woman and man-hood and out of this number there is only one brother and one sister left. The brother is in Indiana and the sister in Washington. On the 14th day of March 1850 she was united in marriage to George Washington Horner who preceeded her to the grave some 18 years ago.

At time of the organization of the United Presbyterian church Mrs. Horner was a charter member, always ready to work for her master. For the past two years she has suffered with cancer, but bore her pain with patience until the end came at 8 o'clock Wednesday morning, being at the time of death 86 years and 2 days old.

Those who are left to morn the loss of a loving mother are: John W. of Carbondale; Mrs. Mary Maxadon of Missouri; Mattie Christine and Anna VanZandt of Kansas; Mrs. Dollie Gladson of Oklahoma; Lyman Horner and Mrs. Belle Rule of St. Louis, also one daughter who has gone on before (Allie); also 22 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren.

Funeral services were held at the family residence this Friday at 11 o'clock also a short sermon at Galum at 1 o'clock conducted by Rev. J. Hamerson. Interment in the cemetery adjoining.
