Lt Budz was the navigator on B-17E #41-2655, with the 5th Air Force, 30th Bombardment Squadron, 19th Bombardment Group. The plane ditched in the ocean immediately after take off from Horn Island air base in Australia in heavy rain, killing three of the crew. They were on a bombing mission to Lae, in New Guinea.
The local VFW is in part named after Lt. Budz and his brother Chester, also a former veteran with the 19th Bombardment Group.
