Son of Oziel Smith and his wife, Margaret Walton. A physician, he served in the War of 1812 (no record identified) and may have learned his profession in that setting. He was one of the first, and possibly the first, doctor to settle the St. Clair area of Illinois. He suffered from chronic sorrow from the loss of his wife, and died after a lingering illness of 4 months.
