NORFOLK - Ruth Briggs Fisher, 89, a longtime resident of Norfolk, died Dec. 15, 2008, in Sentara Norfolk General Hospital after a brief illness.
A native of Davidson County, North Carolina, Mrs. Fisher was the daughter of the late Thomas G. and Frankie Peters Briggs. She graduated from Southmont High School. She was an active member of Miles Memorial United Methodist Church, serving on the church council and holding various positions in the United Methodist Women. A lifelong lover of music, Mrs. Fisher was active in the Virginia Symphony Orchestra League. She was a member of the Dogwood Garden Club, an avid reader and traveler and a basketball fan.
Survivors include her sons, Dr. Stephen C. Fisher of Fredericksburg, Va., Robert B. Fisher of New York City and Thomas Alan Fisher and his wife Stacie of Richmond; and the joy of her life, her grandchildren, Bryce Fisher and Rebecca Fisher of Richmond and Marion Britt of Boston. She was preceded in death by her husband of 54 years, Bryce B. Fisher and her brothers, Joe Floyd Briggs and Charles Ralph Briggs. She is also survived by sister-in-law, Shirley Briggs of Chesapeake; niece, Danna Paul of Livingston, Scotland; and nephew, Warren Briggs of Chesapeake. Also surviving are two special cousins, Jack Briggs and his wife Joan of Denton, N.C., and Michael Surratt of Hinsdale, Ill.
A funeral will be conducted at noon Monday in Miles Memorial United Methodist Church, 9450 Granby St., Norfolk, VA 23503. Burial will be in the family plot at Forest Lawn Cemetery. There will be a visitation with the family from 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday at Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, 8464 Tidewater Drive.
