LAST WORDS A TAUNT TO EXECUTIONER
Unmarked Grave Destiny of First Man to Be Electrocuted in State
George Sidney Sitts dies in the electric chair at the South Dakota Penitentiary at 12:15 a.m. today.
He thus because the first person to be put to death by electrocution in the history of the state and the first person to pay the death penalty for the crime of murder since 1913.
An unmarked grave for an unclaimed body somewhere in the county was Sitts' destiny, but late yesterday afternoon he willed a part of that body to some unknown person. He gave permission for the corneas of his eyes to be removed and sent to an eye bank in New York City.
Death came quickly for the 33-year-old killer of three persons.
The first switch was thrown at 12:10 a.m., sending 2,300 volts through the prisoner's body. One of the three attending physicians said he apparently died instantly.
At 11:45 p.m., prison officials entered Sitts' cell in the death chamber to prepare him for the execution. His head, which had been clipped before, was shaved by Deputy Warden Williams T. Knudtson. Three straps were placed around Sitts' chest and arms. An electrode, containing a wet sponge, was placed inside a $3.55 football helmet, which had been purchased here yesterday.
