RESIDENT OF OREM KILLED ON HIGHWAY
John A. Vance, Veteran Educator, Church Man
Funeral services for John A. Vance, 81, veteran Utah school man and highly respected Sharon LDS stake church worked, who was instantly killed Thursday night on the state highway in front of his home, will be held Sunday afternoon, the time and place to be announced later.
Mr. Vance was struck by a car driven by Weston Kofford, 17, of Orem, while he and his wife were crossing the highway in front of his home half a mile south of the Provo canyon state highway road intersection in Orem, stated Deputy Sheriffs W. T. Lewis and George Loveless, who investigated.
The couple had just left the store and were walking south towards their home. Mrs. Vance, walking a little ahead of her husband, asked him to hurry as a car was coming. Apparently he did not hear, and was truck on the west side of the road just after crossing, the officers said. His body was found 93 feet from the point where he was hit the officers estimated. He was instantly killed.
The Kofford boy, who was accompanied by Dean Farnsworth, 17, of Orem, told Deputies Lewis and Loveless he did not see Mr. Vance until his car struck him. He was driving south.
Mr. Vance was one of the first students of Dr. Karl G. Maeser in the Brigham Young Academy. His early education was in the Alpine schools. He was born September 17, 1855, in Alpine (Utah).
He was principal of the Sharon school at Orem for more than 20 years, and previously taught at Tooele, Alpine, Scipio, Orem, and Thistle.
Mr. Vance was a Sharon stake high priest at the time of his death. Very active in church circles, he had held many positions in the ward, and was a Sunday school superintendent for many years.
His daughter, Mrs. James G. Stratton, and her husband of Orem were working on funeral arrangements this morning. Surviving besides his wife are nine other sons and daughters: Mrs. Raymond Elliott, Mrs. Ertman Christensen, and Mrs. E. H. Calder, Orem; Mrs. J. R. Rawlings, Draper; John A. Vance, Jr., Park Valley; Mrs. E. S. Borquist, Tucson, Arizona; Mrs. Chester Herbst Bellflower, California; Roland Vance, Salt Lake City; and Mrs. Earl Malone Denver.
