Son of Louis and Theodora (Müller) Dielman; brother of John Ernest, Carolina, Mary Agnes, and Louis H. Dielman. Dielman was a topographer and draughtsman for the US Army Corps of Engineers, 1866-72. He was an illustrator of books and magazines and a distinquished draughtsman and painter of genre pictures, allegorical murals, and mosaic murals. His works are found in governent and business buildings Washington, DC, New York, Iowa, and Pennsylvania. He was an original member of the Society of American Artists and was made a National Academician in 1883. He was the president of the National Academy of Design from 1889-1909. He was a member of the Art Commission of New York, 1901-1903; American Water Color Society; Etching Club; and the Salmagundi Club. He was a president of the Art Federation of New York. He was in 1903 appointed professor of Drawing at the College of the City of New York and became a Director of the arts schools at Cooper Union.
