Vernon "Dood" L. Sackett, 85, Grand Rapids, Minn., died Wednesday, Feb. 25, 2009 at Grand Village and Lodge in Grand Rapids.
Dood worked for US Steel for 38 years, and previously served as city council member and mayor of Grand Rapids. He also thoroughly enjoyed working at the Pokegama Public Golf Course. He served in the US Army during World War II, earning among others, the Asiatic-Pacific Theater Service Medal, Philippine Liberation Ribbon with two bronze stars, and the Rifle Expert Combat Infantry Badge. He was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church, the American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Disabled American Veterans, and the Knights of Columbus. Dood enjoyed hunting, fishing, cards, especially cribbage, and his morning coffee with the guys at Kremers, Wal-Mart, and Burger King.
Preceded in death by son Richard.
Survived by spouse of 67 years, Audrey (Gamache) Sackett; daughter-in-law Carol Sackett; sons Ken (Carolyn), Mike (Joy), Jim, Mark (Cathy), Clifford (Elizabeth), Marty, and daughter Sue Scully (Mark). Also 11 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Services: Visitation is Sunday, March 1, 3 - 5 p.m. at Rowe Funeral Home, Grand Rapids, and Monday, March 2, 10 - 11 a.m. at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Grand Rapids, followed by Mass of Christian Burial at St. Joseph's Church at 11 a.m. Memorials to the family preferred in lieu of flowers.
