US Congressman from South Dakota. A New York native, he moved with his parents to Wisconsin at age 14, graduating from Lawrence University in Appleton in 1873. The following year he was admitted to the bar and headed for the Dakota Territory, where he set up a law practice in Yankton (now in South Dakota). He was District Attorney for Yankton County (1876 to 1878), US Attorney for the Dakota Territory (1878), and a member of the Territorial House of Representatives (1877 to 1879) and the Territorial Council (1881 to 1885). After South Dakota was admitted to statehood in 1889, the Republican Gamble set his sights on the US House of Representatives and was elected as an At-Large Delegate in 1890. He served for five months, from March 1891 until his death, before the assembling of the Fifty-second Congress. He was the brother of US Senator Robert Jackson Gamble and the uncle of US Congressman Ralph Abernethy Gamble. (bio by: Bobb Edwards)
