James Sherman is the son of John Sherman and Mary Launce of Watertown.
He married Mary Walker, daughter of Thomas Walker and Mary Stone on 3 May 1680 in Salem, Essex, Massachusetts.

James' career as a preacher ended when he was tired before a church court presided over by Increase Mather. He was charged with bad conduct, including preaching while intoxicated. He was convicted, deposed, defrocked and excommunicated. He later became a physician..
