Newspaper Obituary found in Obit. File at Iowa Genealogy Society Library in Des Moines, Iowa
Levi Prescott Richards was born in Albany, New York, July 29, 1836 and died June 5, 1906 at the age of 69 years, 10 mo. and 6 days. He was married to Jane S. Gregg in Geneseo, N.Y., July 20, 1856 and to this union eleven children were born, James P., Cornelia J., both of whom are dead, Levi A., William E., Fred A., David W., Mrs. Cora W. Heavlin, Mrs. Nancy C.B. Woods, Mrs. Minnie J. Pomeroy, Charlie C. and little Bennie who died in infancy. Eight are still living. Mr. Richards served a term as constable in Farmington, Ill., enlisted in the Civil War Company K 11th Illinois Cavalry under Col. Robt. Ingersoll, and was injured in the battle of Shiloh in 1862. In the year 1873 they came from Illinois to Ringgold County and in 1875 to Decatur County. On June 17, 1900 his wife Jane S. died and on Oct 10, 1900 he was married to Mrs. Anna M. Codding. Mr. Richards has resided in Garden Grove for many years and was wll known to our townspepople as a man of quiet, unassuming ways, a good citizen and a loyal adherent to the cause for which he fought, and in which he received injury.
The Funeral services were Thursday in the Free Methodist Church, Elder L.M. Kob conducting a very impressive service. The bereaved families, the wife and children are accorded the sincere sympathy of all. Mr. Richards when in New York was a member of the old school Presbyterian Church but on coming to this stated united with the Advent Church at Woodland. All the children were present during his illness and all but Charles of Des Moines and David of Newton were in attendance at the funeral.
The sorrowing ones are deeply grateful to their many friends and neighbors for their sympathy and assistance in this hour of affliction and appreciate the kindly motives which prompted their thoughtfulness at this time.
