George E. Birt, 74, Bridgewater, died Wednesday, Feb. 19, 1997, at the Veterans Medical Center in Washington, D.C. Mr. Birt was born Sept. 5, 1922, in Berwick, Pa., and was a son of the late George R. and Margaret Foux Birt.
He received two Purple Hearts from combat in World War II, serving in the U.S. Army, 109th Infantry. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8644 in Bridgewater, the American Legion Post 0188, Harrisonburg, the Fraternal Order of Eagles 4150, the Loyal Order of the Moose 1686 and Moose Legion 47. He was a lifetime member of the Disabled American Veterans.
Mr. Birt was a member of the Bridgewater Presbyterian Church, where he formerly served as a deacon. He retired from Frazier Quarry after several years of service. He had served as town treasurer and tax assessor of Bridgewater and once worked as a realtor and was employed by D.S. Thomas & Sons of Bridgewater. He owned and operated a Gulf Service Station and sold insurance for People's Life.
His first wife, Mary Magadalene Sheffer Birt, preceded him in death. On Aug. 4, 1979, he married the former Verrell L. Lawson, who survives. Also surviving are one son, Jesse G. Birt, San Antonio, Texas; two daughters, Karen L. Weiss, Verona, and Margaret L. Cleaton, Greensboro, N.C.; one stepson, Charles "Chuck" Lawson, McGaheysville; two stepdaughters, Jean Stanley, Morgantown, W.Va., and Aletha "Allie" Crawford, Elkton; five grandchildren; three greatgrandchildren; seven stepgrandchildren; and three stepgreat-grandchildren.
The Rev. John Oldman will conduct the funeral at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Bridgewater Presbyterian Church. Burial will follow at Oak Lawn Cemetery in Bridgewater with full military rites by V.F.W. Post 8644, Bridgewater and V.F.W. Post 632, Harrisonburg.
Friends may call at the Johnson Funeral Service in Bridgewater at any time. The casket will not be open.
