He served on the Lowell Police Department for 29 years, and was Superintendent (Chief) from 1901 until he retired in 1910. One of his "duties" as superintendent was to lead the annual Saint Patrick's Day Parade. Years later he would say, "I'm the only damn Orangeman that ever led a St Patrick's Day parade."
William was the oldest of 13 children. He was born on March 13th, and always considered 13 to be his lucky number. He came to Lowell from Ireland in 1872.
