John Richards was born April 13, 1806 in Hinsdale, Berkshire County, Massachusetts and died in Feb. 18, 1874 Watertown, Jefferson County, Wisconsin. He was the son of William and Monica Richards.

In the mid 1850's John Richards built the famous Octagon House in Watertown, Wisconsin. Mr. Richards was an attorney, and a mayor of Watertown. He also owned and operated a saw and grist mill.
