Death of Mrs. M. Kennedy
Mrs. Elizabeth Kennedy beloved wife of Michael Kennedy, of South Garryowen, was summoned by death at the home of her daughter, Mrs. John Skahill, 2310 Queen street, Thursday morning at 4 o'clock. Although ailing for six months, her condition did not become serious until two months ago.
Mrs. Kennedy, a daughter of the late Edward and Ellen Slattery, was born in Otter Creek August 15, fifty nine years ago and until two months when she went to Dubuque she had always a resident of that community. She possessed a lovable disposition, which endeared her to all who had the privilege of knowing her and the grief-stricken family have the sympathy of innumerable friends in their sorrow.
She was marred thirty-eight year ago to Michael Kennedy who, with three daughters, Mrs. John Skahill, of Dubuque, Mrs. Dan Noonan and Mrs. Clem English, of Bernard, three sons, Patrick and Chris, of Dubuque, Albert, of Garry Owen, eight grandchildren, three sisters, Mrs. James Graham, Dubuque, Mrs. Mary McEvoy, of St. Paul, and Mrs. Theresa McCarthy, of Otter Creek, survive her.
Mrs. Kennedy was a Catholic, member of St. Aloysius church at Garry Owen and the Rosary society of that parish. In her final hour she was comforted by the last rites of the Catholic religion.
The funeral was held Saturday morning from the Skahill residence to Sacred Heart church in Dubuque, at 9 o'clock, where Rev. Albert Nees officiated at a requiem Mass. At the conclusion of the Mass he also delivered a funeral discourse. In the sanctuary were Rev. John Connell, of South Garry Owen, and Rev. Harry Skahill, of Columbia College.
The remains were taken to the mortuary chapel at Mt. Olivet where Father Nees, assisted by Fathers Connell and Skahill, officiated at the committal services. The pallbearers, all nephews of the deceased, were Edward Graham, Neal Carew, Dave Slattery, Leo Martin, John McCarthy and Tim Penny.
