He was the son of Richard Corbin Sanford and Eliza James Sanford.
One source said he was the husband of Victoria Cleopatra Gawen Sanford (December 21, 1860 - 1901) his 1st wife. The 1900 Census shows that she bore 11 children and that 7 were alive at the time of the survey was taken. He later married Lula and produced a few more.
From the Northern Neck News, his obituary read in part:
Walter A. Sanford was 87 when he died at his residence in the Congress Heights section of Washington, D.C. He had been a dealer of livestock for many years, establishing a large business. He owned a farm there before retiring about 1913 and turning over the operations to his sons.
He was a native of Westmoreland County VA., and came to Washington, D.C. in the early 1890s. He was a longtime member of the Congress Heights Baptist Church.
Surviving were his widow, Lula H. Sanford, also from Westmoreland County, Va. Others included ten sons (10): Wilbur, Walter, Lloyd, John, Phillip, Vernon, Randle, Warren, Roger and Herman Sanford; and three (3) daughters: Mrs. Mary Collins, Helen and Dorothy Sanford. In addition, there were 19 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren, all residents of Washington, D.C.
