Charles Byron Landis, M.D., 83, passed away peacefully in his home in Venice, FL, on June 4, 2011, after several months of declining health. Dr. Landis had resided with his wife of nearly 60 years, Marqueta Davis, who survives, for the past 19 years in Englewood, FL. Prior to his retirement, Dr. Landis was an Occupational Physician with Eli Lilly, Tippecanoe Labs for 20 years and an Ophthalmologist in private practice in Lafayette.

Dr. Landis was born in Dayton, IN, on October 18, 1927 to Ruby Day and Charles Russell Landis. When he was a young boy, the family moved to Lafayette. Dr. Landis graduated from Dayton High School, where his father was the principal; Purdue University (B.S., with highest distinction); Northwestern University (M.D., with distinction); and University of Michigan (M.S. in Ophthalmology). He also served in the U.S. Army. He began his ophthalmology practice with Dr. C.H. Ade in Lafayette in 1959. Among numerous other professional accomplishments, he is known for performing the first surgical retinal reattachment in the Lafayette area.

While in Lafayette, Dr. Landis was an active member of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church and many professional organizations and volunteered with the Tippecanoe County Red Cross and Tippecanoe County Medical Society. He was instrumental in developing the Purdue School of Nursing and taught there as an adjunct professor. He is honored as a medical visionary on the Purdue School of Science's Class of 1950 Hall of Fame Wall. He was a life-long learner and teacher.

After retirement, Dr. Landis' love of learning translated into travel to many continents with Marqueta, family members, and friends, and while in Englewood, FL, he was an active member of Christ Lutheran Church and volunteered with Meals on Wheels and Englewood Hospital.

Dr. Landis is most remembered for his listening ear, wise counsel, twinkling eye, dry wit, and unconditional love for his wife, 4 daughters, 2 sons, their spouses and children, and many exchange students from around the world. He is survived by Beverly & Alan Billingsley, Jenna and Carson of Manhattan Beach, CA; Benita & Brian O'Connell, David and Daniel of Exeter, NH; Rev. Betty Landis of Evanston, IL; Charles & Antionette Landis, C. Brahm, Blake and Byron of Indianapolis, IN; and Carl & Karen Landis, Bailey, Briee and Clay of Mishawaka, IN. He was preceded in death by his daughter Beth who is survived by her husband Jim Parsons of Atlanta, GA.
