| Birth: | Jan. 29, 1836 | | Death: | Jun. 17, 1887 |  Civil War Union Brevet Major General, Montana Governor. Born in Carroll County, Ohio, he was a lawyer and a member of the Ohio State Senate when appointed a Captain in the 32nd Ohio Infantry at the start of the Civil War. He served in the Maryland Campaign and was promoted Lieutenant Colonel in December 1862. Promoted Colonel in 1863, he participated in the Vicksburg campaign, commanded a brigade serving under General William T. Sherman and was promoted Brigadier General in January 1865. For meritorious service, he was brevetted Major General of US Volunteers. After the war, President U.S. Grant appointed him the Governor of Montana Territory in 1870 and he served until 1883.
