Death: Jan. 2, 2003

He was one of only four men assigned to the Capt. Harry Armstrong’s historic Physiological Research Laboratory at Wright Field in 1937. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross for his work with the first successful pressurized aircraft. The Armstrong Lab, which today is the Air Force Research Laboratory — Human Effectiveness Directorate, performed pioneering work dealing with human physiology in high-altitude flight, and the development of protective and emergency medical equipment. The Air Force was still in its formative stages, and researchers wanted to find ways to protect pilots from the elements and effects of gravity and altitude. Whitney worked there as a technician until WWII, acting as a test subject in the high-altitude chamber, the development of the oxygen mask and the test flight of the XC-35, the first successfully pressurized aircraft. It was his work on the XC-35 that earned him the Distinguished Flying Cross, an honor awarded for heroism or extraordinary achievement by voluntary action above and beyond the call of duty while participating in aerial flight. After re-enlisting and serving in the Pacific where he trained aircraft crews in emergency survival techniques, he returned to the lab at WPAFB as a civilian employee. He continued to work with the centrifuge and acceleration programs, initiating and developing the pressurized anti-G suit and valve to help protect jet pilots from the crushing effects of acceleration. His design, with minor modifications, is still in use throughout the world.  (bio by: Helen L. Smith Hoke)
