from the La Harpe, IL newspaper, Dec. 17, 1940.
Lorenzo Bennett, one of LaHarpe's most highly esteemed citizens, passed away at his home on East Main street, at 1:35 a. m. Monday, December 9, 1940. For the past year or more he has been in ill-health, and when pneumonia developed, last Friday, Mr. Bennett was not physically able to withstand the disease, and it was known that there was little hopes for his recovery. An oxygen tent was provided, and this made his last hours more comfortable.
Born on a farm in Fountain Green township, on Oct. 3, 1870, he was the son of Nordan and Rhea Jane Noble Bennett. One of three brothers, Raymond and Ransford, preceding him in death.
On Dec. 26, 1901, he was married to Miss Daisy Mesecher and to the union were born two sons and a daughter, Floyd, Loyal and Irene, who with the wife survive. A third son died in infancy. Mr. Bennett was greatly beloved by his 7 grandchildren.
When a young man, Mr. Bennett chose farming as his life work, and was very successful not only as a tiller of the soil but equally so as a feeder of livestock and his neighbors and friends sought his advice both in buying and selling cattle.
Retiring in his comfortable home in town in 1933 he still maintained his interest in his farms, which were operated by his two sons. So long as his health permitted, Mr. Bennett spent his days out in the country, assisting in the work and management of both places.
For 37 years he had been an active member of the Christian church, of which organization he was an elder. His Christianity did not stop with is church membership, but was lived daily in being a good husband, father and neighbor. He was honest, fair and square, and a good citizen.
