John was the son of George and Leffie Hall Reed. He was the first of seven children. His siblings were Grace Coran (Gammon); Printess Ozell (Davis); Etna Opal (Murray); Georgi Estee; Laura Elois (Lapinske) and Joseph Fay Coran Reed. He came to Illinois in the mid 30's where he worked in the Richardson Saw Mill in Hutchins Timber south of Pana in Shelby County. John married Naomi Virginia Bland in 1938. Their children were Dennis Francis, James Eugene "Gene", Norman Lee and Virginia Elaine. He served in the Army during WWII then returned to Pana where he worked as a mechanic until his passing. His services were held in the Assembly of God Church in Pana with burial in Linwood Cemetery.
