James Lonus Penny was an extra ordinary person.
James was a liasian pilot in the Pacific theatre during World War 11, and then taught school and worked for Shell Oil Company. He was also a Mason. My great grandmother LaVerne worked for the school district as well in the cafeteria.
James and LaVerne got married in 1943 and had two girls still living.

James L. Penny

James L. Penny, 78, of Cornett, died Monday, August 4, 1997, at his residence.

Funeral services were at 10 a. m., Wednesday, August 6, at the Cornett United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Durwood Bristow officiating. Burial was in the Cornett Cemetery under the direction of Alexander Funeral Home of Naples.

Mr. Penny was born September 28, 1918, at Flat Creek, Texas. He was a member of the Cornett Methodist Church and a veteran of World War II. He was a retired employee of Shell Oil Company, a 50-year Mason and a Shriner, and a former resident of Pasadena, Texas.

Survivors include his wife, LaVerne Penny of Cornett; two daughters, Jamie Sue Bradberry of Arlington, and Patricia Ann Tigert of Glenwood Springs, Colorado; a brother, Alva Dudley (Shorty) Penny of Linden; four grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and the Hampton brothers and sisters, Elnora Hampton Wells, Troyce Hampton, Winston Hampton and Mary Catherine Hampton.

Serving as pallbearers were James Fitch, Ross Dobelbower, Ben Tigert, Mathew Tigert, Robert Gerald Penny and Randy Brock.
