US Congressman. A lawyer from Syracuse, New York, Johnson came to California in 1863 and settled in Sacramento. In 1878 he was elected to the California State Assembly where he served until 1879. In 1880 he was elected to the California State Senate until 1882. In 1895 he was elected to the United States House of Representatives representing California's 2nd District until 1897. In 1898 he was re-elected to the California State Assembly until 1903 and again from 1907 until 1909. He is the father of California Governor and United States Senator Hiram Warren Johnson.
